    The quick answer

Symbolab is the best overall math solver website in 2026, Wolfram|Alpha is the best for advanced math, and Photomath is the best for scanning homework with your phone. But three of the most popular tools (Symbolab, Mathway and Wolfram|Alpha) lock their full step-by-step solutions behind a paid plan, and Microsoft Math Solver, once the go-to free option, was shut down on 7 July 2025.

We compared the 10 sites that rank highest for "math solver" on Google across features, calculators, user interface and price. Prices were checked in September 2026.

    How we compared them

Each site was scored on five things a student actually cares about, in this order:

    1. 1Steps: does it show the full working for free, or only the final answer?
    2. 2Features: photo input, graphing, AI chat, practice problems, mobile apps.
    3. 3Calculators: how many dedicated tools it has (scientific, graphing, matrix, statistics, unit converter and more).
    4. 4UI: how fast you get from landing on the page to a solved problem, plus ads, sign-up walls and mobile layout.
    5. 5Price: what is free, and what the paid plan costs per year.

We did not run a formal accuracy benchmark. For any answer that counts toward a grade, check it in a second tool, ideally a symbolic engine such as Wolfram|Alpha or GeoGebra.

    Side-by-side comparison

Only four of the eleven tools give full step-by-step working with no account and no payment: Photomath, GeoGebra, Cymath (core solver) and Math Solver. The tables below break that down by features, calculators and UI.

    What the paid plans cost

Annual cost of paid plans for popular math solver websites in 2026

The 10 best math solver websites, reviewed

    1. Symbolab: best overall step-by-step solver

Symbolab covers algebra, trigonometry, calculus, matrices, limits, inequalities, geometry and word problems, and accepts typed notation, plain English and photos. Its solutions are organized by problem type, with practice problems and an AI chat for follow-up questions.

    • Pros: broadest structured step-by-step coverage; good practice mode; photo input.
    • Cons: full steps and full AI chat need Pro; the free view often stops part-way.
    • Price: $9.95/month, $39.95/year or $32.95 for six months.
    • Verdict: the safest single pick if you will use the steps every week and can pay for Pro.

    2. Wolfram|Alpha: best for advanced math and checking answers

Wolfram|Alpha is a computation engine rather than a tutor. It handles everything from arithmetic to differential equations, linear algebra, complex analysis and statistics, and shows plots, domains and alternate forms that chat-style tools skip.

    • Pros: unmatched breadth; exact symbolic results; the best second opinion for any answer.
    • Cons: no step-by-step on the free plan; dense results page can overwhelm beginners.
    • Price: Pro $9.99/month or $60/year.
    • Verdict: essential for university math and verification, not the friendliest first stop for school homework.

    3. Photomath: best for scanning homework with your phone

Photomath, now owned by Google, scans printed or handwritten problems and shows the answer with more than one solving method. It covers elementary math through calculus.

    • Pros: the free plan already includes step-by-step explanations; best camera recognition; polished mobile app.
    • Cons: mobile-first; weaker for long proofs and open-ended university problems.
    • Price: Plus $9.99/month or $69.99/year (adds visual aids and deeper "why" explanations).
    • Verdict: the best pick when the problem starts on paper.
Free step-by-step Math Solver with 207+ calculators, no sign-up

    4. GeoGebra: best free graphing, geometry and CAS suite

GeoGebra combines graphing, geometry, 3D, a computer algebra system, a scientific calculator and probability tools, all free. Its Math Solver adds photo input, steps and similar practice problems, and Math Practice gives hints on each move.

    • Pros: completely free; excellent for seeing how a graph changes; trusted in classrooms.
    • Cons: you pick between several apps before you start; practice hints cover a narrower set of topics.
    • Price: free.
    • Verdict: the best free option for visual learners and teachers.

    5. Desmos: best free graphing calculator

Desmos builds free graphing, scientific, four-function, matrix, geometry and 3D calculators. It is the cleanest graphing experience on the web and is used in many standardized tests.

    • Pros: instant, beautiful graphs; no clutter; free classroom activities.
    • Cons: it is a calculator, not a solver, so it shows no step-by-step working.
    • Price: free.
    • Verdict: pair it with a step-by-step solver; it is the graph, not the explanation.

    6. Mathway: best for fast answers across many subjects

Mathway covers basic math, pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, statistics, finite math, linear algebra, chemistry and physics in one input box, plus a photo option in the app.

    • Pros: very broad; fast; large library of worked examples.
    • Cons: step-by-step access is paid; ads on the free version.
    • Price: $9.99/month or $39.99/year.
    • Verdict: a quick answer machine, but you pay to learn the method.

    7. Omni Calculator: largest calculator library

Omni Calculator lists 3,938 free calculators, including 687 for math, 196 for statistics and 546 for physics. Each calculator has its own page with an explanation of the formula.

    • Pros: a calculator for almost anything; clear formula explanations; strong for everyday and finance math.
    • Cons: not an equation solver, so you cannot type an arbitrary problem; step-by-step only on some calculators; ads.
    • Price: free.
    • Verdict: great when you know which formula you need.

    8. Gauth: best chat-style STEM homework helper

Gauth takes a typed or photographed question and writes numbered steps with a reason for each one, and you can ask follow-up questions. It also covers physics and chemistry.

    • Pros: conversational; follow-up questions do not use up your daily solves.
    • Cons: answers come from a language model with no symbolic checker, so they can be confidently wrong; three free solves per day after sign-up.
    • Price: $11.99/month, $31.99/quarter or $99.99/year.
    • Verdict: good for getting unstuck; always verify the final answer elsewhere.

    9. Mathos AI: best AI tutor experience

Mathos AI turns a question into a worked solution, an animated video, a quiz or flashcards, and its whiteboard tutor follows your working and flags mistakes. It accepts images, voice and PDFs.

    • Pros: the richest tutoring features; hints instead of full answers if you want them.
    • Cons: priced weekly, which adds up fast; generative answers still need checking.
    • Price: Basic $5.98/week, Prime $9.98/week, with a three-day trial.
    • Verdict: worth it for intensive exam prep, expensive for occasional use.

    10. Cymath: best lightweight algebra and calculus solver

Cymath is a focused solver for algebra and calculus that combines heuristics and AI to produce teacher-style steps, on the web, iOS and Android.

    • Pros: free core steps; simple and fast for equations, derivatives and integrals.
    • Cons: narrow range; ads on the free plan; deeper sub-steps need Plus.
    • Price: Plus $5/month.
    • Verdict: a solid, cheap helper you will outgrow beyond calculus.

Editor's note: Math Solver (our tool)

We built Math Solver for students who want the steps without the paywall. It does not have photo input or AI chat, but every one of its 207+ calculators shows the full working for free, with no account.

    • Pros: every step free; no sign-up ever; 207+ calculators filtered by subject and school level; full scientific and graphing calculators; formulas checked against standard references.
    • Cons: no camera or handwriting input; you choose a calculator rather than typing any free-form problem.
    • Price: free.
    • Best for: students from elementary school to university who want to learn the method on a specific formula.

Which math solver should you use?

Pick by the job, not by brand: the right tool depends on where your problem starts and whether you need the steps.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best free math solver website?

For free step-by-step working, GeoGebra, Photomath and Math Solver are the strongest options in 2026. Photomath is best on a phone, GeoGebra for graphs and geometry, and Math Solver for formula-based steps in a browser with no sign-up.

Is Microsoft Math Solver still available?

No. Microsoft retired the Math Solver app on 7 July 2025 and moved some of its features into the Math Assistant in OneNote. Popular free alternatives are Math Solver, GeoGebra and Photomath.

    Is Symbolab better than Mathway?

Symbolab gives more structured steps and practice, while Mathway covers more subjects and answers faster. Both charge for full steps, at about $40 a year.

Which math solver shows steps for free?

Photomath, GeoGebra, Cymath (core solver) and Math Solver show step-by-step solutions on their free plans. Symbolab, Mathway and Wolfram|Alpha reserve full steps for paid plans.

Which math solver is most accurate?

Symbolic engines such as Wolfram|Alpha and GeoGebra's CAS are the most reliable for exact answers. AI tutors like Gauth and Mathos AI can explain well but can also be confidently wrong, so check their final answers in a second tool.

Is using a math solver cheating?

Using a solver to check your work or learn a method is legitimate study. Copying answers into graded work is not; follow your school's academic integrity rules.

Do I need to sign up to use Math Solver?

No. Every calculator and every step-by-step solution on Math Solver works without an account.
