How to solve a linear equation
1. Expand brackets: 2(4z + 8) = −40 becomes 8z + 16 = −40.
2. Collect variable terms on one side and numbers on the other: 8z = −40 − 16 = −56.
3. Divide by the coefficient: z = −56 ÷ 8 = −7.
4. Check by substituting back: 2(4·(−7) + 8) = 2(−20) = −40 ✓
